The use of cheap palm oil in food, pet food and soap is destroying the habitats of orangutans and other endangered creatures. Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth say that the phrase ‘sustainable palm oil’ is as useful as a chocolate teapot. It’s just a self-policed industry run by big business, that uses a label, to carry on as before.
Real food does not contain palm oil, so just avoid it. It’s only found in ready-made junk food. If you enjoy vegan baking, you can find many palm-oil vegan butters on the market. Or make your own vegan butter. Avoid any food that contains ‘vegetable oil’ but does not state where from. Friendly Soap is a good brand of palm-oil-free vegan soap.
One popular food that often contains palm oil is peanut butter. So look for organic peanut butter brands that are free from palm oil.
